Leeds firm developing revolutionary fabric - 04/08/08

A Leeds University spin-out firm is developing a revolutionary new fabric, which experts say could change the face of medical processes.

The Yorkshire Evening Post reports that the Nonwovens Innovation and Research Institute has been given £165,000 by regional development agency Yorkshire Forward to undertake the project.

Hydrospace is a fabric which has channels running through it, which can be filled with materials.

It can also be used as a filter, removing toxic chemicals from blood or separating air and chemicals.

The Institute's managing director Chris Fowler told the paper that Hydrospace's novelty "lies in its ability to create and fill channels inside the fabric".

He added: "Hydrospace provides a controlled storage and delivery mechanism for numerous active ingredients which is simple to manufacture and is relevant to many markets and applications."

In related news, the Business Desk reports that a northern upmarket dining group has announced it is to open a new restaurant in the spa town of Harrogate, North Yorkshire, providing a boost to its leisure industry.
