Sheffield firm boosts city's skills sector - 23/05/08

A Sheffield-based engineering firm has boosted the region's skills set, after supporting a round of trainees through its apprentice scheme.

Sheffield Forgemasters' award-winning course has seen graduates leave the firm with an Advance Apprenticeship Framework, which has equipped them with skills in the electrical engineering and metals processing industry, reports the Business Desk.

Graham Honeyman, chief executive at the firm, told the website: "The UK steel industry has lost a lot of important skills over the years and we need to find ways of putting that knowledge back.

"[Sheffield Forgemasters] is in a strong position to do just that and we have been careful in the selection of our apprentices."

He added that the firm is "extremely proud" of its graduates and wishes them congratulations.

In related news, Barnsley-based Race Cottam Associates were celebrating this week after a £9.8 million waste treatment plant it designed won a prestigious national environmental award, reports the Sheffield Star.
