Prestigious Danish award for Leeds food and drink company - 24/08/2008

Leeds-based Arla Foods UK, the country’s leading dairy company with a turnover of £1.15bn, has been awarded a prestigious Danish award, The Diploma of the Danish Export Association and His Royal Highness Prince Henrik’s Medal of Honour.
The honour, which is presented annually, is awarded to Danish companies located outside of Denmark in recognition of outstanding efforts in promoting and marketing Danish products and services abroad.
As a subsidiary of Arla Foods amba, a co-operative owned by Danish and Swedish farmers, Arla Foods UK has been honoured for delivering a substantial increase in its earnings and significantly growing sales of exported products, particularly those within the Lurpak and Anchor brands. In 2007, Lurpak became the UK’s number one selling butter and spreads brand and has since increased its lead over its nearest competition by £30 million. Arla is well located in Yorkshire and Humber, which is widely recognised as the leading European centre for innovation in the food and drink industry.
In addition to growing sales of exported products in the UK, the judging panel recognised Arla Foods UK’s commitment to lessening its impact on the environment. During 2007 energy consumption was reduced by 16%, water by 21.6% and carbon dioxide by 16.4%. Over 791 tonnes of packaging was also recycled.
Danish Ambassador Birger Riis-Jorgensen, who presented the award to the company said: “I am delighted to present this award for delivering outstanding business performance, not only in terms of the growth they have achieved for exported products, but for their dedication to the increasingly important environmental agenda.”
