Brandon Medical Ltd
Design Futures CIC
Brandon Medical has been specialists in medical lighting systems since the 1960s. Their products combine in-house manufacturing with factoring of other manufacturer's products. Their primary product objectives are to create differentiation from competitors (through improved aesthetics or functional changes), reduce manufacturing costs and remove the reliance on overseas suppliers. With those aims in mind, they approached the Design Futures CIC with three projects to provide the creative industrial design expertise which they did not have within their own R&D and engineering team.
Project one was the redesign of the enclosure for the company's Galaxy Ultra Mobile operating lamp to give it a more contemporary appearance and allow it to "nest", so more units could be stacked in a small space. Project two was the redesign of the Quasar single operating light. Previously supplied from Taiwan and branded as a Brandon product, the company wanted to take control of production, cut manufacturing costs and redesign the piece to differentiate it from the competition. Project three was the redesign of a yoke for use alongside theatre lights.
Galaxy Ultra Mobile is already in production. The new design has enabled a major increase in orders to the UK and overseas markets; turnover has increased by £250,000 in the first year. The Quasar and yoke projects are also complete and ready to come to market shortly. Quasar production will be entirely in-house, which will bring in extra margins at a reduced cost. This moves away from 'me-too' labelling and allows for unique, substantially improved products which will do much to enhance the company's reputation. All three projects were concluded on time and in-budget.
